GRCC uses $250,000 to plug deficit from enrollment drop; staff criticizes board's diversity discussions - Brian McVicar, MLive

Grand Rapids Community College will use $250,000 in savings to help balance its budget after a 7.5 percent drop in enrollment left the school with less revenue than needed. The move was approved Monday by GRCC’s Board of Trustees as part of the college’s mid-year budget amendment. Trustees Richard Ryskamp and Richard Stewart voted against the mid-year budget amendment because it maintains funding for two programs they oppose – the Woodrick Diversity Learning Center and Actors’ Theatre. In addition to the $250,000 in savings, the decline in revenue was also offset by a reduction in salaries and wages. Less was needed to cover salaries and wages because declining enrollment resulted in fewer course sections being offered. http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2014/02/grcc_uses_250000_in_savings_to.html
