Potential Portland State University faculty strike: Friction continues - Betsy Hammond, the Oregonian
Both sides are taking umbrage as Portland State University's administration and faculty union try to find agreement on a new contract to avert a first-ever strike at an Oregon University. Union leaders accuse the administration of trying to poison public and student opinion -- and, worse, ignoring the big picture of troubling spending patterns that have directed money away from instruction and faculty pay. Administration officials say the union isn't willing to meet to negotiate at any time, as they are -- and worse, has been unwilling to make substantive moves to compromise, as administrators say they have and will. Both sides continue to say they are making a good-faith effort to find agreement and avoid a strike.
