University of Southern Maine students protest cuts, faculty layoffs due to budget shortfall - THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

University of Southern Maine students are protesting cuts and layoffs of faculty resulting from a budget shortfall. About 100 students gathered outside the office of the provost Friday after about a dozen faculty members received layoff notices. Flat state funding and declining enrollment contributed to a $14 million budget gap in the fiscal year that starts in July. Together, the University of Maine System schools face a $36 million budget shortfall. The names and exact number of faculty members laid off Friday weren't immediately available. http://www.greenfieldreporter.com/view/story/8f1da5d855e849679c577e371fb5a712/ME--USM-Cuts
