WMU’S COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES UNDERGOES BUDGET CUTS - MeghanChandler, Western Herald
Western Michigan University’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has undergone a budget cut of $1.9 million for the 2013-14 school year, according to a letter sent by CAS Dean Alex Enyedi. In Enyedi’s State of the College Address in September, he said that the cut comes amid increases in staff and faculty compensation as well as the college’s declining performance in student enrollment, credit hour production and research productivity.
John Spitsbergen, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, said the budget cut may have a negative effect on the college’s faculty. “The continuous drive to do more with less has pushed many faculty and departments very close to the breaking point,” Spitsbergen said. “Without some relief it is likely that we will lose many of our best research active faculty.”
