UAF eyes options to close expected $12 million budget gap - Jeff Richardson, News Miner
A University of Alaska Fairbanks committee unveiled dozens of proposals Wednesday to cut at least $12 million from the UAF budget, including longer campus closure periods, shifting to more online programs and slashing support for public broadcasting. UAF is expecting a budget gap of between $12 million and $14 million next year due to a combination of increasing fixed costs and a reduction in state funding. The UAF Planning and Budget Committee has worked since December to identify ways to save those funds. "There's a wide range of considerations," said UAF Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Pat Pitney, who served as co-chair of the committee. "It's a pretty significant budget situation we're facing."
