Federal budget cuts reduce number of USD students doing research - DOLLY A. BUTZ, Sioux City Journal
Fewer graduate students are conducting research at the University of South Dakota because of federal spending cuts. Congress slashed billions of dollars from federal research funding in 2013, including $1.55 billion from the National Institutes of Health, to pay down the deficit. Some of that money funds grants for medical research at USD and other universities around the country. Mary Berry, vice president for research at USD, said fewer students will be able to pursue advanced degrees in medicine or science and will likely be forced into other fields of study.
