Budget outlook grim for University of Alaska - Jeff Richardson, News Miner
University of Alaska President Pat Gamble gave a grim budget briefing to the Board of Regents on Wednesday, saying that an expected reduction in state funding will require a third straight year of serious cuts. Gamble said difficult and unpopular measures likely will be needed to fill the anticipated budget gap, including the elimination of some academic programs and another round of employee layoffs. The summary preceded a vote on UA’s state funding request at the board’s meeting this week in Fairbanks. With a drop in oil prices this year — plummeting from more than $110 per barrel to about $80 per barrel — state revenue projections have been on a steady decline.
