USM faces faculty retirements - Mike Reagan, WMTW

University of Southern Maine's president has announced 36 faculty members plan to retire. The university must cut $16 million in its budget, including layoffs and program eliminations, said Judie O'Malley, assistant director of public affairs at USM. It has to submit a balanced budget to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees by Jan. 1. USM President David Flanagan participated in a teleconference with a board of trustees committee meeting on Wednesday and said 36 faculty members plan to retire, she said. Of the retirements, 25 are from departments slated for cutbacks. O'Malley said USM will have to do rehiring for the 11 positions in departments not set for reductions. The university has a total of 423 full-time faculty. http://www.wmtw.com/news/usm-faces-faculty-retirements/29298312
