SCC’s future successes threatened by long-term state budget cuts - Wendy Byerly Wood, Elkin Tribune

Surry Community College administrators are calling on legislators to stop the budget cuts and invest in the heart of the community’s economic development — the community college that trains and educates the future workforce. SCC President Dr. David Shockley is visiting with the legislators who represent the Surry and Yadkin service area in the hopes that the college will regain $840,077 — money that the college earned, but is withheld from the budget — called Management Flexibility Reduction. “These dollars were actually earned by Surry Community College, but each year the college is forced to return money to the state,” Shockley said. “We are not asking for new dollars. We just want to retain the money that Surry Community College has earned. Over the past six years, the Management Flexibility Reduction has cost Surry $5.3 million that could have been reinvested in the College.” http://www.elkintribune.com/news/news/152874114/SCCs-future-successes-threatened-by-long-term-state-budget-cuts
