Republican budget plan includes student aid cuts -Tara García Mathewson, Education Dive

Republicans in Congress have agreed on a spending plan for 2016 that would limit Pell Grants and cut student loan subsidies. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports the plan would cut the maximum Pell Grant amount by almost 16% and return the program’s status to discretionary, meaning no budget amount would be guaranteed in future talks. The plan would also end interest subsidies on Stafford loans, reduce the reach of income-based repayment options, and eliminate loan forgiveness for public sector workers, according to the article.
