WVSU raises tuition, approves budget - Ryan Quinn, WV Gazette

West Virginia State University’s Board of Governors Thursday approved tuition and fee increases — including a roughly 7 percent jump for in-state undergraduates — along with its 2015-16 budget Thursday. The board approved the increases in a voice vote with no nays. Ten members were in attendance. Gail Pitchford and Megan Guetzloff, the elected student representative, were absent. University officials blamed the increasing tuition on decreases in state appropriations. In signing the state’s 2015-16 budget bill last month, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin approved a more than $7 million cut to West Virginia’s two-year and four-year college and university systems — $2.8 million above the cut approved by legislators in their budget bill. The $7 million cut, less than 1 percent across-the-board for all two-year and four-year institutions, was the third in three years for higher education — there was a 3 percent cut this fiscal year and a 9 percent cut in 2013-14. http://www.wvgazette.com/article/20150423/GZ01/150429582
