UMass President Marty Meehan talks college affordability in 1st day on job.-Shira Schoenberg, the Republican

Meehan said he has talked to U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, about ways to lower student loan rates. Warren has called for changing the current student loan system so that government no longer profits from issuing student loans. Meehan says he too supports lowering student loan interest rates. He also supports an idea Warren champions for "debt-free college," giving students a chance to go to a public college that is cheap enough not to require loans – though Meehan said to do that, Congress would have to pass legislation to fund it. Baker has resisted calls for more money for UMass, saying he would like to see the university manage its money more efficiently. Meehan said the school has saved money through efficiencies in procurement processes and energy costs. http://www.masslive.com/news/boston/index.ssf/2015/07/umass_president_marty_meehan_t.html
