When the University of North Carolina at Pembroke athletic department announced the immediate termination of its men’s soccer program on Jan. 9, confusion and disappointment blanketed the student-athletes and alumni who dedicated their college careers to the team’s success. It was an unfortunate reality for those involved, but the department was not in unfamiliar territory. The school subjected its men’s golf and women’s tennis teams to a similar fate in 2015.
