From Bernie Sanders’ free college proposal to our president-elect’s suggested crackdown on monster college endowments, so-called “college affordability” proposals are abound—and with good reason. Experts estimate that by 2020, 65% of jobs will require education or training beyond a high school diploma. But college tuition continues to grow. So at a time when a college degree is a prerequisite for even entry-level jobs, the cost of college is putting higher education’s promise of economic mobility beyond reach for a growing number of students.
