Eastern may cut sports -- but it's complicated - ROB STROUD, Journal-Gazette Times-Courier

astern Illinois University is still considering cutting some of its sports teams as a way to reduce expenses, but the complexity of the revenues and costs involved with these sports has made selecting teams to potentially cut a challenging action. During a planning retreat on Saturday, the EIU Board of Trustees heard an update from university President David Glassman and Athletic Director Tom Michael on this ongoing review of the teams. Glassman said EIU offers 21 sports teams and needs to offer at least 14 to keep NCAA Division 1 classification, which the board has indicated that it wants to retain. He said EIU does have a lot of teams in comparison to other schools in the Ohio Valley Conference, where the average number of teams is 17. In addition, Glassman said EIU must maintain parity between its men's and women's sports in order to meet federal Title IX education regulations. http://jg-tc.com/news/local/eastern-may-cut-sports----but-it-s/article_ea757d03-65db-556c-8e7e-4140bd43d111.html
