Change in education budget is misguided - Marietta Daily Journal Letter

The change in the state’s education budget that removed funding for non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) AP (advanced placement) courses is misguided. They have increased the cost of college for every high achieving, low-income student, not just language, humanities and art students. It will not steer students towards STEM degrees and careers, but it could make those paths more expensive. In my experience as a college planner, many STEM students will decide to retake the class in college regardless of the score because it may not completely cover all material and will prove them to be unprepared for next level of that STEM path. But many language, humanities and art courses taken in college are only for that requirement and no further study is planned. Good AP scores can finish up a requirement for a STEM major. Now they will have to pay for that test. http://www.mdjonline.com/opinion/letters_to_editor/change-in-education-budget-is-misguided/article_ea424caa-8603-11e7-a93f-630d3c8e3891.html
