The Syllabus: Why college costs keep going up - John Newsom, Greensboro News and Record
A Temple University economist who took to Twitter to criticize the math in the first AEI report I linked to had argued previously that the impact of state budget cuts is much greater — they’re responsible for three-fourths of the increase in college costs. The Temple professor did more research to pinpoint a pass-through amount: For every $1,000 in state and local budget cuts for higher ed, the typical student sees a tuition bill that’s $257 higher. Elsewhere, public flagships are chasing out-of-state students because they pay more in tuition. And a new paper by a Harvard economist says that if this nation is serious about producing more college graduates, it should spend more money on instruction rather than trying to reduce tuition bills.
