UConn President Susan Herbst: New Budget Means Eliminating Jobs, Services - Nicholas Rondinone, Courant
In a letter to the community Friday, UConn President Susan Herbst said cuts in this new bipartisan state budget would result in a hiring freeze and the elimination of some jobs and services. Under the budget, passed by the House of Representatives, UConn and UConn Health Center face a cut of roughly $143 million in state money. Though Herbst said this is better than past options, she wrote: “A two-year cut of $143 million is still a very steep reduction. It will clearly have a significant negative impact on the university and will mean difficult decisions.” The governor has not said whether he will sign the budget, but has said it contains an error to the tune of $1 billion.
