Cuomo tells lawmakers to deal with funds in the budget - Joe Mahoney, CNHI
Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued vetoes Tuesday that disappointed education advocates while approving another measure that lawmakers say is designed to improve local building-code enforcement. Cuomo rejected legislation that would have provided New York's public universities with millions of dollars to help them pay for operating costs such as utilities, building repairs and salaries. In his veto message, Cuomo said such funding decisions should be addressed in the annual negotiations for the state budget, and pointed out the bills would cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars at a time when New York faces "devastating" cuts from the federal government. The potential beneficiaries of the added assistance that lawmakers wanted included SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Oneonta. But Cuomo argued: 'It would be irresponsible to assume such unbudgeted costs at this time."
