What we're doing at Keene State, and why, by Todd Leach and Melinda Treadwell, Sentinel Source
At Keene State, we are bringing the budget into alignment with demographic realities, and we are also building investment into the budget. Many smaller colleges will make the mistake of “across the board” cuts or neglecting long term investments in innovation or maintenance of the infrastructure. At Keene State, we are taking a strategic approach by prioritizing the student experience at every turn. In fact, rightsizing has been an opportunity to address crowding issues in the dorms that resulted from peak enrollments, and to review again the use of dorms that were least liked by students. The University System has long been focused on efficiencies and those efforts have been further reinforced across all of our public institutions. Centralized procurement, self-insurance, and other leveraged shared services provide Keene State with an advantage most small colleges do not have, and we are remaining steadfast in our review of processes and opportunities for collaboration across the System that can further contain costs.
