Joliet Junior College students get partial tuition refund for first time in history, officials say - Donna Vickroy, Southtown Daily
What? Money back on your college tuition? In Illinois? For the first time in its history, officials said, students enrolled at Joliet Junior College are receiving a partial tuition reimbursement this academic year. In the spring, as the state budget crisis neared the three-year mark, the college's board of trustees and college leadership, anticipating a reduction in funding from the Illinois legislature, raised tuition by $19 per credit hour, to help make up the expected gap, Joliet Junior College President Judy Mitchell wrote in an email to students. "However," Mitchell wrote, "because state funding is better than expected this year, we are able to partially reimburse you for the financial burden you helped us shoulder during this difficult time."
