English chairman 'taken aback' by UW-Stevens Point plan to cut majors - Keith Uhlig and Alan Hovorka, Stevens Point Journal

UW-Stevens Point administrators on Monday said they plan to eliminate low-demand liberal arts degree programs, including English, history and political science. It is part of the college's efforts to address a projected deficit of $4.5 million over two years because of declining enrollment and lower tuition revenues. Mike Williams, the chairman of the Department of English, said he had no idea that English would be on a list of potential cutbacks.
