Bromley column: Campus budget-cutting more science than art - Ben Bromley, News Republic
If one University of Wisconsin campus’ cost-cutting proposal is approved, degrees in history will be, well, history. UW-Stevens Point administrators have proposed eliminating 13 liberal arts degree programs, including English, political science and history. Oh, the humanities! Cutting those majors and adding or expanding 16 others could help the school overcome a projected $4.5 million budget deficit. But the move may come at the inestimable price of turning our university system into trade schools. The Wisconsin Idea is, according to university leaders trying to make ends meet, no longer such a good idea.
