Is public higher education in a fiscal free fall - Morehead News
It was a little over a month ago when we sounded the warning in this space that Kentucky’s institutions of public higher education were teetering on a financial precipice. Ten straight years of state budget cuts and the public pension crisis had created a perfect storm of fiscal pressures that could result in drastic declines in enrollment and employment on the eight university campuses and the 16 colleges of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). As the next state budget went into free conference last weekend, the House and Senate were far apart on funding for public higher education with the Senate opting to side with Gov. Matt Bevin and reinstate the proposed 6.25 percent cut in general fund support of all institutions.
