1 day after ski program is cut, UNM coach hired by Utah - KOB
One day after regents at the University of New Mexico approved cutting several sports programs, the cherry-picking was underway. On Friday the University of Utah announced it hired long-time UNM ski coach Frederik Landstedt to lead its ski program. Under Landstedt, the UNM ski team won the university's first NCAA championship in 2004. The skiing, men's soccer, beach volleyball and diving programs will end at UNM effective July, 2019. The controversial cuts come in the wake of a nearly $5 million athletic budget deficit, as well as problems in meeting gender equality requirements.
