It’s time for Ohio to stem the tide of rising college costs -Victoria Jackson, Plain Dealer
Ohio is at a crossroads: We can continue on the shaky path of unmanageable student debt and soaring college costs, or we can change course and invest in people and communities through public higher education. State policymakers can create an equitable free-college program that helps moderate-income students pay for tuition and basic living expenses or continue to underfund higher education, placing it further out of reach for many Ohioans. Governor-elect Mike DeWine will decide what road we take. Despite having a world-class network of public universities and community colleges, Ohio does poorly on most higher education outcomes. Only 39 percent of Ohioans between 25 and 64 years old have an associate’s degree or higher, compared to nearly 42 percent nationally. That’s a far cry from the state’s goal of 65 percent by 2025.
