Tennessee's athletic department operated with a $6.5 million deficit in the 2017-18 fiscal year in large part due to buyouts for former employees, according to figures reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel on Thursday. The firing of former Vols football coach Butch Jones and his staff plus former athletic director John Currie and the $13.8 million in severance payments caused Tennessee to go from a $10.8 million surplus in the 2016-17 fiscal year, according to the report from Blake Toppmeyer of the KNS.
