UNM needs to put all sports on level paying field - DICK MINZNER, ABQ Journal

In the next few years, the University of New Mexico athletics department will likely face budget concerns. The principal reason will be continuing low revenues from football ticket sales. Unless the university further subsidizes athletics by increasing student fees or cutting other university budgets, there will be pressure to eliminate sports. During the Board of Regents’ recent deliberations resulting in the termination of soccer, skiing and beach volleyball, it was clear sports teams were not competing for survival on a level playing field. Football and basketball were safe from elimination because the Mountain West Conference requires UNM to compete in those sports.
