When Colorado’s Joint Budget Committee announced May 19 it would be cutting 58%, or close to $500 million, from the state’s contribution to higher education as a result of revenue shortfalls due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was an undeniably shocking quantity. But the truth in the so-called ivory towers of higher ed in Colorado was that this was expected and, frankly, reasonable. “The JBC did the right thing,” said University of Northern Colorado president Andy Feinstein by phone Friday. “It could’ve been a lot worse.”
