As the University of Akron asks its board of trustees next week to approve layoffs for what could be hundreds of professors and other staff, the faculty union is begging the administration to slow down. The administration has argued the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated existing financial problems, and even if projections for the next year improve — they already have, although much is in flux — drastic measures must be taken now.
