The University of Akron will cut about $44 million from its budget this year in an effort to stabilize its finances and weather the COVID-19 pandemic. The savings are permanent cuts that will come from reductions in workforce the board of trustees approved in July, along with higher employee contributions toward health care, retirements, eliminating unfilled positions and a previously announced $4.4 million cut to athletics.
