House Speaker Ronald Mariano says city councilors' calls to stop supporting or move Quincy College to the state's community college system are misguided and short-sighted. Mariano spoke to a Pstriot Ledger reporter about his views on the school amid a contentious series of discussions between city councilors and Mayor Thomas Koch's administration. Koch wants to build a 16-story building in downtown Quincy, projected to cost at least $100 million, to hold city hall offices and serve as a permanent home for Quincy College. But city councilors say the school's recent financial and enrollment troubles call into question if taxpayers should be footing the bill for such a campus, or if the city should be responsible for the school at all.
