The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will finalize a series of cuts to academic programs and faculty members at the University of Nebraska at Kearney when it meets next week. Weeks after faculty and students made a pitch to save bachelor’s programs in geography, theater and recreation management, regents will consider terminating those degrees, according to an agenda for the Feb. 9 meeting. The reductions are part of an effort to trim $5 million from UNK’s budget, including $3 million from academic programs, to close a budget shortfall created by declining enrollments, limited revenue growth and increased costs of operations. If approved, the cuts are expected to generate approximately $1.2 million in savings for UNK.
