Public universities should expect deep cuts when the Senate operating budget is unveiled Monday, Democratic leaders in the Legislature said Thursday. Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, said the final pieces of the budget are still being negotiated with House Democrats but that cuts to higher education would total about $500 million. That's $158 million more than the $342 million Gov. Chris Gregoire proposed cutting from higher education in her budget proposal released in December.
