Battle growing over Quebec university financing - KAREN SEIDMAN, Montreal Gazette
The debate on university financing seems to be divided along two lines: Those who believe universities are struggling because they are underfunded, and those who believe they are struggling because they are mismanaged. As Quebec prepares for a higher education summit workshop on university financing later this week, trying to reconcile those two positions won’t be an easy task judging from the way accusations have been flying among stakeholders in the university community. And the task at hand didn’t get easier when the Parti Québécois announced sudden cuts of an additional $124 million for this fiscal year to all universities last December, creating even more instability and tension in a system that claims to be chronically underfunded.
