The bad news is in the mail: 90-day layoff notices sent to Long Island College Hospital workers - LORE CROGHAN, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Layoff notices were mailed late Tuesday to the homes of 1,800 Long Island College Hospital employees — the same day state officials voted to close the Cobble Hill healthcare facility. The mailing of the 90-day warning letters sets the clock ticking: Legally the hospital could shut down as soon as June 17 if the state Health Department approves its closure. “Nobody questions the commitment and skill of staff at LICH,” said Robert Bellafiore, a spokesman for SUNY Downstate Medical Center, which owns LICH. “But the fact is that LICH is not sustainable as an enterprise,” he said. “Its continued operation puts all of Downstate Medical Center at risk. That’s 8,000 jobs and Brooklyn’s only medical school.” http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/brooklyn/bad-news-mail-90-day-layoff-notices-lich-workers-article-1.1294467
