Higher education in the U.S. is struggling. Many of its problems are beyond its control, including a global pandemic, changing demographics, increasingly hostile state legislatures, and increasing competition from higher-education sectors abroad. But there is one problem firmly under its power: administrative incompetence. Put simply, all too many administrators fail to understand what it takes to create and sustain a high-quality school. Mills College in Oakland, California—a 170-year-old institution facing financial difficulties—is a perfect example.
