Gov. Tony Evers is calling for a major spending boost in public higher education that will help colleges address rising costs, make tuition more affordable for low-income students and expand financial aid. The Democratic governor on Wednesday proposed a $305 million increase for University of Wisconsin System campuses over the next two fiscal years. That's less than the $435 million UW System asked for, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Even so, top UW leaders praised the proposal, saying it would help schools educate the state's future workforce.
