University of Iowa President Sally Mason said Tuesday that federal stimulus funds will allow the university to avoid layoffs and furloughs for the time being. The state cut UI’s budget by $34 million, but matching funds from the stimulus program will temporarily plug the gap, Mason wrote in an e-mail to the university community. Mason said the temporary influx of funds will delay any furloughs, salary reductions and layoffs that UI had been considering to bridge the budget shortfall. But UI’s future budget outlook is grim.
