Don't feed Michigan Promise Scholarships to the budget beast - The Saginaw News Editorial Board
The long knives of budget-cutters in Lansing are drawn this summer to cut a vein that feeds student dreams for a better life. In late June, the Michigan Senate voted to eliminate the Michigan Promise Scholarships and some other college tuition aid to address a $1.7 billion budget deficit. The House has yet to vote on the drastic measure. Like a lot of the cuts left to legislators in a state too used to budget cutting, this one is paltry in comparison to the budget shortfall that may gobble it up.The $140 million program gives up to $4,000 to each Michigan student who scores well as a high school junior in the Michigan Merit Exam and seeks additional training at a Michigan college or trade school.
