Bill would provide students a welcome relief - Tuscaloosa News

College students and their families certainly do not need another study to tell them that the cost of higher education is rising, but they got just such a report Tuesday from the College Board.
The consortium of colleges and universities across the country reported Tuesday that despite a 2.1 percent drop in the Consumer Price Index from July 2008 to July 2009, four-year public institutions of higher education raised tuition and fees by an average of 6.5 percent last year.
Such institutions are being hit with something of a double whammy while they cope with the
decreasing funding from private sources hard hit by the recession, they are also having to deal with dwindling support from the states, also suffering from the same drastic economic downturn.
