Proposed cuts could hit wallets of college students - Tyler Briggs, Olean Times Herald
Attending college is difficult already, with all the late-night studying for exams, all the reading for classes and trying to balance a social life with academics and possibly a job. But if Gov. David Paterson has his way, going to college will become even more difficult for students relying on funding help from the state. Gov. David Paterson recently announced plans to cut $500 million in current-year spending from state agencies. The hardest hit was the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Gov. Paterson has asked SUNY schools to cut $90 million in current-year spending. “These proposed cuts would have a direct impact on students’ wallets,” said Sister Margaret Carney, president of St. Bonaventure University. The private university isn’t exempt from the potential losses that the 64 SUNY campuses might experience.
