The most recent decreases were the product of a $248 million midyear gap in the state budget. State officials say that gap was caused by a drop in state tax collections and an increase in K-12 education costs. Nicholls State lost more than $1.6 million in this month’s cut, about 3 percent of the Thibodaux university’s total $57.1 million income. Fletcher Technical Community College in Houma lost nearly $265,000. Because Fletcher has less total revenue, that amounts to about a 6 percent cut.
