State's budget-cutting efforts begin to take shape - PEGGY FIKAC, Houston Chronicle

University faculty and staff would feel most of the pain of the proposed budget cuts, but students would not be immune, according to plans made available by some institutions Monday. Most schools have extended flexible hiring freezes. Several — including the University of Houston, UH-Downtown and UH-Clear Lake — call for furloughs, requiring all faculty and staff to take one or more unpaid days off. Most will cut travel and delay some planned maintenance, and many suggest layoffs are possible.
