Students will continue to see fewer classes, teachers and services as the San Mateo County Community College District has lopped off more than $6 million from its budget. "The bulk of the cuts are coming from student services, counseling and adjunct faculty," Robert Ovetz, an instructor at Cañada College in Redwood City, said Thursday. "Public higher education is under attack."
This week, the district board approved about $6.5 million worth of cuts for the 2010-11 fiscal year. That's about $887,000 from Cañada, $1.7 million from Skyline College in San Bruno and $2.5 million from College of San Mateo, according to a district staff report. The district office and other services will take a $1.4 million hit. "Obviously, we don't feel great making the cuts," board Vice President Dave Mandelkern said. "It hurts like hell. But when we don't have the money, we don't have the money."
