As he drives to work in the morning, James Appleton considers himself president of the University of Redlands. Not interim. He is committed to be a hands-on president for a limited period of time. "We are functioning as a team with excitement, even though we have tough times ahead," he said. Those tough times will include some $7 million in budget cuts and probably faculty layoffs, a prospect that sparked concern in the College of Arts and Science, a likely target as the university's largest entity.
