University of California Tries to Trim Down - RACHEL GROSS, NY Times

A year of furloughs, layoffs and student fee increases has made it clear that the 10-campus system can no longer continue to do business as usual. Instead, it aims to save an ambitious $500 million over the next five years through a combination of trimming excess expenditures and centralizing operations, as The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
