UT forges ahead with budget cuts, layoffs - JEANNIE KEVER, HOUSTON CHRONICLE

The president of the University of Texas at Austin warned employees Monday that looming budget cuts are about to hit home. About 200 administrative jobs will be cut, William Powers said in an e-mail sent to faculty and staff, while an unspecified number of additional jobs may be trimmed from the university's academic operations in the coming year. The announcement wasn't a surprise. Powers and other university officials have said for months that layoffs will be required to cope with a projected $14.6 million annual budget shortfall. The cuts actually began last year; 125 positions have been eliminated, including 70 in the information technology division.
