WWU facing $3 million more in cuts, including some furloughs - Kira M. Cox, THE BELLINGHAM HERALD
Western Washington University will need to cut more than $3 million in operating expenses next school year, but exactly how those cuts will happen is still being discussed. The state Legislature finished the state supplemental budget early Tuesday, April 13, finally giving Western officials a target to meet. Western is facing about $3.1 million in recurring cuts, as well as about $1.2 million in one-time cuts. The one-time cuts are from a bill the Legislature passed requiring state agency employees to take furloughs. The bill allows colleges and universities to determine how they will meet the one-time cuts, but some of Western's likely will be done through furloughs, according to university officials.
