Western Washington University is losing about $3 million in state funding for next school year, but officials want to move forward with plans that benefit students and keep the university moving forward in tough financial times. As part of the 2010-11 budget proposal, which was released by President Bruce Shepard on Thursday, May 13, the university will reallocate about $1.3 million to fund items that have been deemed a high priority by campus leaders.
For example, the proposal includes $750,000 to fund an increase in adjunct faculty, allowing for more classes and sections for students. There would be a freeze on new tenure-track positions, with a few exceptions, but the additional staff would help students get into the classes they need and graduate on time.
